Tony's Chocolonely
About this interview
Ynzo Van Zanten, Chief Choco Evangelist at Tony's Chocolonely, brings his infectious energy to Earth Live for a conversation about making 100% slave-free chocolate the norm.
Founded in 2012 by Dutch journalist Teun van de Keuken, Tony's Chocolonely set out to prove that chocolate could be made without exploitation. Van Zanten explains the company's five sourcing principles, their model of paying farmers a living income premium, and their strategy of leading by example to inspire industry-wide change. He is candid about the challenges of tracing cocoa back to farm level in West Africa and the structural issues that keep farmers in poverty.
The conversation cuts through corporate sustainability rhetoric to ask hard questions about what it actually takes to clean up a supply chain, and whether the chocolate industry as a whole is moving fast enough.
