Earth observation satellites pass telecom in European space industry sales

Earth observation satellites have overtaken telecommunication systems as the largest revenue-producing space sector in Europe, according to the Eurospace Facts and Figures report published July 7, 2026. EO manufacturing sales surpassed telecom systems by 24 percent in 2025, marking a historic shift for a European space industry where telecom had traditionally been the dominant category.

The satellite applications sector, which includes EO, telecom, and navigation, grew 23.5 percent compared with 2023. According to Eurospace managing director Pierre Lionnet, military demand is the primary driver of EO growth, now expressed more strongly toward Earth observation systems than any other space capability. Countries with the highest demand include Spain, France, Germany, Poland, and Finland.

European space industry sales rebounded overall in 2025 after a contraction in 2024. Commercial and export sales increased 35 percent since 2024, driven largely by launch service uptake. ESA remained the industry's largest customer, with ESA-related revenues increasing 560 million euros, up 20 percent from 2024 to 2025, supported by policy reforms enabling faster spending.

Institutional programs still account for over 70 percent of total industry revenues, meaning Europe's space economy has not yet shifted to private-sector dominance. But the growth in professional services, as national and European agencies outsource more technical assistance, engineering, and system development to industry, signals a maturing ecosystem. The trend is significant for the Earth observation community because it demonstrates that EO is no longer a niche within the space industry but its leading commercial segment, with implications for investment, innovation, and the pace of new constellation deployments.
